Artists We Love: Disability Pride Month

This month is all about disability pride! To commemorate this month we will spotlight 10 artists. Each artist in some way helped to promote people with disabilities through their art in LA county. Through their art knowledge and awareness can be spread throughout our communities.

Renée Reizman identifies herself as a disabled, Jewish, interdisciplinary artist, writer, and educator. Renée works with diverse communities to tell  stories about infrastructure, public policy, and social change. Renée engages with the public through residencies and workshops throughout LA County. Laura started to do art based on the view of disability because her former partner had a stroke. It led her to see that no matter the age anyone can have a disability for a variety of reasons. Now she reimagines the idea of a disability through the lens of art. (Click to see more)

 

Vanessa sees herself as a disabled Chicana dance artist, filmmaker, visual artist, poet & an Intersectional Disability Justice activist. Her work shows nationally and internationally as well as advocacy for disability justice. She hopes that through her dancing she can help to dismantle systematic oppressions. (Click to see more)

 

Emily sees herself as an artist primarily and then a disabled. She does primarily art installations as it allows her more freedom to do what she wants. She didn’t originally want to make art until she encountered the lack of discourse around disability in the art world and so now she makes art to advocate. (Click to see more)

Marlena works in both 2D and 3D mediums. Influences come from illustrative stylization, cartoons, and animated films. She is able to demonstrate relationships and story through her art. She created her works at Tierra de Sol, a foundation dedicated to helping those with developmental disabilities. (Click to see more)

 

Tierra del Sol is an organization that strongly believes in the inclusion of those with disabilities in employment, education, and art. Shawn Gong is a high functioning adult on the autism spectrum. He works a lot with photography who believes in the idea of inclusion of different faces to create social understanding. (Click to see more)

 

Alexis Neumann is an artist, scholar, and curator whose work engages disability studies, theology, and intersectionality. She does this because  she lives with illnesses like Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. In her art she uses bio-medical imagery, vinyl, copper wire, and plexiglass, as well as light and sound. (Click to see more)

 

Ashley Bravin is a disabled artist and advocate. Her artwork focuses on documenting and processing her experiences with her chronic conditions. This gives viewers the opportunity to witness the realities of day-to-day disabled life. (Click to see more)

 

Emily Suñez is an advocate for those with chronic illnesses as she lives with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). She is an artist, author, and illustrator. Her subjects often deal with landscapes of the southwest as she grew up in Virginia but now lives in Pasadena, California. (Click to see more)
