Tao Te Ching # 10

Can you hold the door of your tent
Wide in the firmament?
Can you, with the simple stature
Of a child, breathing nature,
Become notwithstanding, A man?
Can you continue befriending With no prejudice, no ban?
Can you, mating with Heaven,
Serve as the female part?
Can your learned head take leaven
From the wisdom of your heart?
If you can bear issue and nourish its growing,
If you can guide without claim or strife,
If you can stay in the lead of men without their knowing,
You are at the core of life.

Hsin Hsin Ming, Sen T'san, 3rd Patriarch

We started this exposure to these old teachings 8 months ago. One month is a good start for contemplating each verse. This is the 9th verse, each month we will add one more until it is complete. Check the newsletter archive at Transformationarts.org for past months.

Consider movement stationary
and the stationary in movement,
both movement and rest disappear.
When such dualities cease to exist
Oneness itself cannot exist.
To this ultimate finality
no law or description applies.
For the unified mind in accord with the Way
all self-centered striving ceases.
Doubts and irresolution vanish
and life in true faith is possible.
With a single stroke we are freed from bondage;
nothing clings to us and we hold to nothing.
All is empty, clear,self-illuminating,
with no exertion of the minds power.
Here thought,feeling,knowledge and imagination
are of no value,
In the World of muchness
there is neither self nor other-than-self.

Tips for fall

Autumn is a time where the yang/warmth of the sun begins to lessen and give way to the yin/cooler seasons of fall and winter. In autumn one must begin to store vital energy in order to make it through the winter in a healthy state. One must slow down from the sometimes frenetic activity of the summer. The movement of autumn in Chinese medicine is downward, and this is evident in the root-based vegetables that are available during that time. These veggies reach down into the ground to acquire their energy which we consume to acquire that energy.

Life Style, Tai Chi and the Art of Change...
by Michael Vasquez

Life Style injury and illness prevention is a touchy subject for most as it infers we may not understand the effects of our habits and patterns associated with habitual accumulations or un-checked deficiencies. Life Style is a general term that can be understood as a working relationship with Balance/Change/Movement. Coincidentally, these three words are the essence of the Internal Practices of Tai Chi/QiGong/Yoga. The Life-Style Change Arts of these health learning management systems are the deeper understanding of "mind/body" fitness. The oral and written teachings associated with Internal Arts is the current "missing component" that ties and demystifies the connection of the art & science, connecting the benefits associated with Life-Style Changes.

When we examine the effects of habits associated with accumulations, we find that moderation has been replaced with states of wanting, that often lead to addiction patterns. This "objective view" is a primary element of our innate survival intelligence and is based on direct sensory-feedback from our bodies experience of any type of excess or build-up. First, when we consider this, our memory can easily relate to feelings that all of us share, with respect to excessive states, such as:

  • Over-eating can result in a "stuffed" or over-full feeling
  • Tension/stress can result in a over-charged or energy build-up feeling
  • Overly sensitive can lead to dramatic emotional displays
  • Over-thinking leads to thought build-up/confusion

Health Promotion FIRST Act
Ms. SCHAKOWSKY (for herself, Mr. BURGESS, and Mr. GENE GREEN of Texas) introduced the following bill; which was referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce

A BILL
To provide for increased research, coordination, and expansion of health promotion programs through the Department of Health and Human Services.

Congress makes the following findings:
(1) Lifestyle factors are responsible for almost half of the premature deaths in developed nations and a large portion of the deaths in developing nations.

(2) Lifestyle factors are a primary cause of the 6 leading causes of death in the United States, including heart disease, cancer, stroke, respiratory diseases, accidents, and diabetes, which account for almost 75 percent of all deaths in the United States.

(3) A significant portion of the health disparities in the United States are caused by lifestyle factors, which could be improved by health promotion programs.

(4) The United States is experiencing epidemics in diabetes and obesity among adults and children, at the same time a majority of the population is sedentary and eats an unhealthy diet.

(5) Per capita medical care costs in the United States are more than double those of all but 4 other countries in the world, yet the United States ranks 42nd in the world in life expectancy.

(6) Medical care costs are second only to education in State government budgets.

(7) Lifestyle factors are responsible for at least 25 percent of employer’s medical care costs in the United States.

(8) National costs of obesity account for 9.1 percent of all medical costs, reaching $93,000,000 in 2002. Approximately 1/2 of these costs were paid by the Medicare & Medicaid Programs.
